Training Tips

For Runners

If you are a new runner, or been at the sport for a while, here are a few of my favorite tips to take your training to the next level!

Start Small

Start small. No matter what your goal may be, to run a breathless mile or someday complete a full marathon, you will need to start with small, achievable goals, to set yourself up for success. That doesn’t mean you can’t have the big dream (those are important too), but it just means to give yourself small achievable points along the journey that will provide you with the confidence to continue on.

Build A Foundation

Whether you are a new runner or a seasoned marathon pro, your body needs a strong base to stay healthy. It can feel hard to juggle both a running schedule and to incorporate other training, but do your best to stick to a few days a week of strength training or yoga to mix it up and add some core and strength training to your regimen.

Train Smart

This tip goes along with tip #1, of start small. I know, I know, you are excited, but make sure you are training smart and giving yourself enough rest to adjust. You will build confidence by achieving small realistic goals and build a strong foundation to help prevent injury.

Embrace Discomfort

It won’t last forever, but if you have never run before, or even if you’re pushing to a new distance or pace, it’s bound to be uncomfortable. Side stitches, sore toes, and soreness should only be temporary while your body adjusts to this new level, but if you stick it out, your body should adapt. Of course, if it seems like you are in serious pain then definitely talk to your doctor and be sure that there is nothing physically going on.

Shoes Matter

A good pair of running shoes are a must. Specialty running stores are great to helping you find the perfect pair of shoes, but if you don’t have that at your disposal, do some online research on the best shoes for your type of foot. Typically a stability shoe is great for beginners. Also, size up!
